Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE)

Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE)

Description

The tool can be used to methodically assess mental status and can be used to reassess changes in cognitive status. It is an 11-question measure that tests these five areas of cognitive function:

  • Orientation
  • Retention
  • Attention
  • Recall
  • Language

The maximum possible score is 30, representing high function. A score of 23 or lower is indicative of cognitive impairment. The MMSE takes only 5-10 minutes to administer and is, therefore, practical to use repeatedly and routinely.8

Intended Population

The MMSE is effective as a screening tool for cognitive impairment with older adults and has been a successful tool used as the cognitive component during an elder driver assessment. MMSE also identifies psychiatric, neurologic, geriatric, and other medical populations as useful areas for this tool.8

Where to Obtain

The MMSE is published by:

Psychological Assessment Resources (PAR), Inc.
16204 N. Florida Avenue, Lutz, FL 33549
(800) 331-8378 (813) 449-4066

Can be purchased online at: http://www.minimental.com/

It is also available in PDF versions accessible through Google searches. However, since these versions may have been modified and it is probably safer to purchase through PAR. The kit costs $130, but if you only need the a packet of forms they can be purchased for around $56.
